The course will examine the neurological systems that process information and mediate behavior, taking a psychological perspective to explore the anatomical, physiological, developmental, psychiatric aspects of brain function and behavior. Neurophysiology and brain anatomy will be covered along with specialized topics such as neuroplasticity, neurohormones, sleep, memory, emotion, stress, addiction, brain trauma and psychological disorders, and consciousness. Chemical, pharmacological and behavioral interventions that impact or improve mental health will be discussed. Students will acquire a foundation for understanding of how the nervous system functions, in order to understand how the brain might malfunction. Discussion topics and assignments will challenge students to use the concepts within their scope of practice. Students will use and refine research evaluation skills and writing skills.
